Hide Placement with Barbara Schwerdt

Hide Placement...you're in charge! In this two-day, hands-on seminar, we'll explore the many aspects of hide placement such as: how does odor work? How did you know that hide would do that? How will my dog work the odor? And so much more! Through power point, hands-on exercises, and video review, you will leave with a deeper appreciation of the many facets of hide placement.

This is a hands-on working seminar including setting hides as well as running dogs. Each working team will be able to run at least two of four elements. All teams need to be on odor. Pairing optional.

Hand & Paw: A Shared Journey to Individual Solutions

Whether working with your own dog or, if you're a dog professional, a client’s dog, we all share the same journey with the same quest: How do we help this dog and his person? Statistics, jargon, recipes and top-down approaches can leave us unsure about how to find the best solution for each individual dog and situation.

With so much information and so many options available, how do you determine what an individual dog and his person need and how do you achieve that?

This seminar provides new approaches to thinking about training and dogs in a comprehensive, whole dog way. Learn to become more effective and humane as you refine your ability to see, question, analyze and test drive your understanding and training plans.

What's in Your Dog's Wardrobe?

What's in Your Dog's Wardrobe?

  • Does your dog wear a collar or harness?
  • Have you ever wondered how the collar or harness you’ve chosen for your dog affects his brain and body?

It’s hard to say no to a fancy new addition to your dog’s wardrobe with so many creative and colorful options to choose from these days. And while there are plenty of opinions about whether your dog should wear a harness vs a collar, the conversation seems to end there. Blanket recommendations about one specific harness or another often fall short of considering your dog’s shape and how he moves, or the long term effects of the equipment recommended, and can still leave you in the dark about what’s best for your dog.

But don’t despair! In this half day workshop Dr. Donna Gigliotti will educate you about choosing the best-fitting equipment for your four-legged friend that will keep him both comfortable and sound. Dr. Gigliotti will cover:

  • How to choose the right equipment for your dog
  • How to properly fit a collar or harness
  • The effects of equipment on your dog’s anatomy
  • How the dog’s anatomy affects the equipment you choose
  • How ill-fitting equipment can lead to stress
  • How that stress impacts your dog’s brain & physiology
  • Equipment that assists you and your senior dog

Bonus: You may opt to continue your learning after the workshop, when Dr. Gigliotti will be offering evaluations and consultations for selected dogs.

CARAT 1.1

CARAT 1.1

Developed by Suzanne Clothier in 2007, CARAT (Clothier Animal Response Assessment Tool) is a novel assessment system that categorizes behavior traits in multiple components that are intuitive and practical.

CARAT takes a detailed view of the individual dog as a unique combination of many factors working together to influence, exacerbate, mitigate and enhance each other. In the profile created by the nuances and specifics of this complex interaction of multiple traits, an accurate picture is created of the individual, regardless of breed or age.

CARAT is unique in its recognition that a response to any given stimulus can either inhibit or activate the animal, attract the animal or create avoidant behavior, and that the distinction between the two is critical in understanding the individual. For example, a dog who reacts quickly and avoidantly to a sudden noise is demonstrating a different response than a dog who reacts quickly and towards the same noise.

At all times, behavior is assessed according to how productive, functional, or adaptive it may be, with a full understanding that what may be productive, functional or adaptive in one context may not be in another context. For example, there would be great differences in the CARAT profiles for a successful guide dog, competitive agility and a suitable companion for an elderly person with mobility issues.

WHO NEEDS CARAT? CARAT is a must-have tool for any serious animal professional who is involved in assessing behavior. Whether you are a trainer, a behaviorist, a breeder, a veterinarian, in rescue/shelter work, or involved in service dog organizations, CARAT can open a new world of observation and understanding. CARAT will fine tune your assessments, your behavior modification & training plans, improve your selection of suitable dogs for a given task, sharpen your breeding program's focus on desired traits, and help find the best possible job/task/home for an individual dog.

This is CARAT Level I-Intro training, which includes development of observation skills, basic Level I CARAT concepts, introduction to assessments & the Clothier puppy test and IFT tests. Video, group exercises, live assessments.

CARAT Level I is a 3-part certification. Level I-Intro is a pre-requisite for the follow on trainings, which are scheduled for 2018 & 2019.
