CARAT 1.1

Developed by Suzanne Clothier in 2007, CARAT (Clothier Animal Response Assessment Tool) is a novel assessment system that categorizes behavior traits in multiple components that are intuitive and practical.

CARAT takes a detailed view of the individual dog as a unique combination of many factors working together to influence, exacerbate, mitigate and enhance each other. In the profile created by the nuances and specifics of this complex interaction of multiple traits, an accurate picture is created of the individual, regardless of breed or age.

CARAT is unique in its recognition that a response to any given stimulus can either inhibit or activate the animal, attract the animal or create avoidant behavior, and that the distinction between the two is critical in understanding the individual. For example, a dog who reacts quickly and avoidantly to a sudden noise is demonstrating a different response than a dog who reacts quickly and towards the same noise.

At all times, behavior is assessed according to how productive, functional, or adaptive it may be, with a full understanding that what may be productive, functional or adaptive in one context may not be in another context. For example, there would be great differences in the CARAT profiles for a successful guide dog, competitive agility and a suitable companion for an elderly person with mobility issues.

WHO NEEDS CARAT? CARAT is a must-have tool for any serious animal professional who is involved in assessing behavior. Whether you are a trainer, a behaviorist, a breeder, a veterinarian, in rescue/shelter work, or involved in service dog organizations, CARAT can open a new world of observation and understanding. CARAT will fine tune your assessments, your behavior modification & training plans, improve your selection of suitable dogs for a given task, sharpen your breeding program's focus on desired traits, and help find the best possible job/task/home for an individual dog.

This is CARAT Level I-Intro training, which includes development of observation skills, basic Level I CARAT concepts, introduction to assessments & the Clothier puppy test and IFT tests. Video, group exercises, live assessments.

CARAT Level I is a 3-part certification. Level I-Intro is a pre-requisite for the follow on trainings, which are scheduled for 2018 & 2019.

Suzanne Clothier: Cultivating Canines: How to Grow Your Own Best Friend

Cultivate:

1. to develop or improve by education or training; to train; to refine;
2. to promote the growth or development of;
3. to devote oneself to;
4. to seek to promote or foster (friendship, love, etc.).
5. to seek the acquaintance or friendship of (a person).

This fascinating new seminar from Suzanne Clothier offers a comprehensive approach to raising dogs with respect. If we are cultivating rather than merely raising or training, we can approach this part of our journey with our dogs in new ways. We begin to understand that the quality of all we do contributes to the dog we have at our side now and in the future.

In this seminar, taught with humor, scientifically grounded knowledge and a deep passion for dogs, Suzanne’s Relationship Centered Training principles combine with her lifetime of experience raising dogs and helping others do the same. Whether a first time owner falling in love with their new dog, or a non-profit organization seeking to raise dogs who can serve mankind, this seminar presents Suzanne’s thoughtful approach to truly cultivating canines so that they can grow into a best friend.

John Rice Following Ghosts Tracking Seminar

The Following Ghosts approach supports and depends on the relationship between dog and handler. These seminars provide eye-opening moments of understanding that will forever change how handlers see their dog.

The Following Ghosts approach is built on the understanding that long before we begin teaching them, dogs already know how to track, air-scent and trail, and they also know how to discriminate between scents. Our job as handlers is to help the dog do these things for us, in specific ways, in specific places, for specific reasons, while including the handler as part of the team.

The Following Ghosts approach is based in T.R.U.T.H.:

  • Trust in and respect for the dog’s natural abilities
  • Relationship between dog and handler
  • Understanding of scent, terrain and track laying
  • Transitions and complexity to build skill
  • Handling to assist and support the dog

At a Following Ghosts tracking workshop, handlers learn how to:

  • develop their dog’s tracking skills (duration, complexity, transitions, surfaces, commitment)
  • track almost anywhere, almost anytime – town or country, variable surfaces
  • read their individual dog’s body language
  • lay tracks like an expert
  • “read” the terrain and scent conditions
  • use handling & equipment to support their dog

At the end of a one-day beginner’s workshop, most students in any Following Ghosts workshop will be running a three legged track and often working on variable surfaces as well. All participants will have a better understanding of tracking, and working with their dog as a team.

LIMITED WORKING SPOTS AVAILABLE!!  Auditors are expected to be active participants, laying tracks, assisting handlers and working with the group exercises.

Reactive dogs may not participate, but the handler is welcome to audit this event.
